Art Curator Mashonda Tifrere Is Giving Female Artists the Floor

Mashonda Tifrere invests in women artists. But it’s not transactional. Her investment runs deep, not only promoting their work but empowering them as individuals and spotlighting their unique ways of seeing the world. The need is clear: Approximately 13 percent of artists represented in major American art museum collections are by women, even though women make up 55 percent of working artists, she says.

A Photography Show Celebrating Black New York Opens at the World Trade Center

The group show, organized by the independent curator and former R&B singer Mashonda Tifrere, includes works by Jamel Shabazz, who has been documenting hip-hop and street culture since 1980, Flo Ngala, a photojournalist and the first Black woman to photograph the Met Gala, and Laylah Barrayn, a frequent contributor to the New York Times. The show also features works by Steven John Irby, Shareif Ziyadat, Shandora “Shakka” Smith, and Johnny Nunez.

The New York– and Los Angeles–based curator and art advisor Mashonda Tifrere has long been dedicated to amplifying the voices of artists of the African diaspora. In 2016, she founded ArtLeadHER, a nonprofit that seeks to support the work of female-identifying creators; and more recently, she created Art Genesis, a platform dedicated to supporting emerging artists. “It’s important to center Black femmes simply because they have been denied access,” Tifrere said in a recent interview. “Giving artists an equal opportunity to thrive and create art, also to build sustainable careers, is central to the work that I do with ArtLeadHER and Art Genesis.”
